Community Involvement
Members of the Firm have distinguished themselves through various community activities including the following:
- Anne Marie Finch has been elected to the 2012 Board of Directors for Habitat for Horses, Inc. Habitat for Horses is one of the largest equine protection organizations in the country, with supporters in every state and around the world. While its main facilities are in Texas, it has foster homes and adopted horses throughout the United States. With hundreds of active volunteers, Habitat for Horses maintains an extensive network of foster homes that devote much of their lives to the rehabilitation and retraining of the equine that come through its gates. Every year it completes hundreds of investigations and touches the lives of thousands of horses. Since its main emphasis is the education of the owner, it is able to successfully complete most of those investigations. When required, it assists law enforcement in taking the case through the court system and placing the horses in foster homes.

- Mark E. Wise continues to participate on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Region of the Anti Defamation League and as President of the Houston Jewish Family Foundation.
- Mary S. Axelrad serves on the Houston Project Council (an arm of St. Lukes United Methodist Church) and remains active with CREW Houston (Commercial Real Estate Woman).
- Anne Marie Finch participates on the Board of Directors for Girls Inc. of Greater Houston and was recently elected its Chair Elect.
- Alvin L. Zimmerman continues to serve on the Boards of Directors of the University of Houston Foundation, University of Houston Law Center Foundation, the University of Houston Law Review Foundation, and the Southwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League.
- The Firm continues its many years as a contributor to charitable activities including the Houston Bar Association's 100 Club member, Meals on Wheels for Senior Citizens, Coats for Tots and The Handy Man Task Project, as well as various church and community benefits.
- The Firm recently donated a painting to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Adios, Mahatma, a 1988 portrait of Mahatma Gandhi painted by influential Puerto Rican artist Domingo García, founder of the Galería Campeche in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The painting (pictured below) will be on permanent display in the Ancient and Modern Indian exhibition of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.
- Members of Zimmerman, Axelrad, Meyer, Stern & Wise, P.C. participated in the Houston Young Lawyers Association's Helping Elder Hands Project. The project was a one-day event in coordination with Meals on Wheels of Greater Houston to assist senior citizens with homes in need of repair and maintenance. Each volunteer group was assigned to the home of an elderly person who has signed up to receive help from Houston Helping Elder Hands. Volunteers from the Firm went out and helped by both performing basic "handy man" tasks and simply interacting with the elderly citizens. The project focused on a particular geographic area in Houston where there are a number of elderly people in need.
